Installing a Kitchen Tile Backsplash in Poway Homes

Want to upgrade kitchens of Poway homes? A new tile backsplash can turn your old kitchen into a bright modern one, with the right color tiles.  The good thing about installing a backsplash is that it isn't hard to do.

Plan your backsplash project

If you already have an old backsplash that is just painted in the drywall, just install your new tiles on top of it. Sand the area to rough up the surface and get ready to install. But if it's an old tile backsplash, you need to remove it completely. Cut the existing backer (usually drywall) and get rid of it with the attached tiles. Install the new backer board directly onto the exposed studs.  A green (waterproof) drywall is cheaper than the cement backer board and it's also lighter and easier to work with.

Know the length of your backsplash then measure the distance from the top of the counter to the bottom of the wall cabinet to calculate the area you'll need to cover with tiles. Since you have already the calculated space, it's time to figure out your tile pattern.  There are a lot of designs in the market, just chose the best that can accentuate Poway homes for sale kitchens. Also, don't forget to add at least 10 percent of tiles for cutting and wastage.

Installing the backsplash

To start installing, remove the range hood and stove or anything that will be in your way. Power off any outlets or switches and remove the cover plates. If the tiles are running over any gaps, you can install a temporary ledger board along the base to help hold the tiles in place. Always start at the center, apply tile mastic beginning at the bottom row then put the edge of the first tile on the vertical line leaving a gap of about 1/8 in on the bottom, and wiggle the tiles into place. Follow your pattern and install any highlight or decorative as you like.

Cutting the tile

When you need to cut a tile, use a scoring cutter. Just mark the tile where you need to cut and place the tine in the tool and score a mark in the tile surface. Using a sharp motion of the tool handle, the cutter will breathe tile along the scored line.

Grouting

After installing the tiles and the mastic is already dry, it's time to grout. Apply it using a rubber float and push down into the gaps between the tiles then remove the excess. Let the grout to set for at least an hour before cleaning.

Finishing it up

Finally, apply a bead of tub and tile caulk along the bottom seam. Choose the same color as the grout. Consider sealing the gout by using a silicone grout sealer. This will keep your new kitchen backsplash looking new for years.
